Location: Remote
Contract Type: Long-Term Contract
Industry: Advanced Nuclear / Generation IV Reactor Technology
System One is seeking a highly skilled Instrumentation & Controls
(I&C) Engineer to support the development of Sodium Fast
Reactor technologies. This contractor position reports directly to
the Plant I&C Manager and will play a key role in designing,
developing, and integrating I&C systems for advanced nuclear
applications.
The role includes responsibility for instrument and control system
design, prototype development and testing, plant-level system
integration, and commissioning. You will work closely with internal
and external engineering teams, vendors, and stakeholders to
deliver high-quality, technically sound solutions for Generation IV
nuclear reactor systems.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design and integration of I&C and supporting
electrical systems from functional requirements through final
design and commissioning.
Collaborate with a geographically distributed team of in-house,
subcontracted, and partner resources to develop system
documentation and designs.
Develop and review system- and component-level specifications,
scopes of work, and engineering documentation.
Ensure compliance with nuclear industry codes, standards (e.g.,
IEEE, IEC), and NRC regulations in all engineering activities.
Specify and evaluate instrumentation for use in high-temperature
and sodium fast reactor environments, considering performance
criteria such as accuracy, range, and response time.
Perform technical analyses of I&C system design in accordance
with licensing requirements and quality assurance standards (e.g.,
10 CFR 50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1).
Generate and manage detailed drawing packages, including P&IDs,
loop diagrams, control architecture drawings, and installation
layouts.
Develop integrated system design packages and support interface
control with related disciplines (mechanical, electrical, nuclear,
etc.).
Provide technical direction and oversight to suppliers, ensuring
deliverables meet project requirements.
Support continuous improvement by applying nuclear industry best
practices and identifying process enhancements.
Assist with licensing activities and contribute to documentation
such as Safety Analysis Reports (SARs).
Contribute to I&C system testing, including development and
review of formal system startup procedures.
Qualifications & Experience
B.S. or higher in Controls, Electrical Engineering, or a related
discipline from an accredited university.
6+ years of experience in instrumentation and controls systems
design, development, and integration. (Advanced degrees may
substitute for years of experience.)
Proven ability to deliver robust I&C solutions in complex
technical environments.
Familiarity with nuclear instrumentation or reactor safety system
design preferred.
Experience with IEEE/IEC standards, industrial process control, and
development of PFDs and P&IDs.
Understanding of nuclear QA frameworks such as ASME NQA-1, 10 CFR
50 Appendix B, and related regulatory compliance.
CAD software proficiency preferred (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical,
SolidWorks).
Experience with high-temperature process systems (400 -C and above)
is a plus.
Excellent technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal
skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage competing objectives and lead
multidisciplinary teams with minimal supervision.
Experience with startup testing procedures and integration of
I&C systems is highly desirable.
